It’s Gonna Hurt…Be OK With That

When I was learning to teach yoga we learned that there should be pain in the poses. As a new teacher this is a confronting thing to hear.

As someone who practices yoga of course I know this, yet to transfer that knowledge to another person is far tougher!

Yet it’s not the pain that is the problem – it’s the type of pain.

Maybe, obviously?, when there is searing, unbearable, something is breaking or being damaged type pain- then STOP.

However when there is uncomfortable pain. Muscles under pressure, breathing into a stretch, holding a pose for longer than you believe you can. Holding when you want to stop because it starts to feel uncomfortable.  This is exactly the place where you use your breathe to hold you there. This is where your practice gain’s strength and you move forward.

It is the same in LIFE.

In order to grow and move forward in life there MUST be the type of pain that is uncomfortable, that is stretching you, that you have to put in effort for. It is easyto pull away from yet inherently you know you are not in danger … really you are simply in fear.

Of course, there is the same principle with the pain that is to be noted and withdrawn from. Sometimes this might be physical danger and sometimes – possibly more often – emotional*

Your growth in life will hurtit will be painful because you are going to have to stretch yourself, you are going to have to do things that require effort. You are going to have to breathe to hold you during that time where you are building muscle to move into a new posture, to go deeper, to try something you have not tried before.

Do not be afraid of it. Breathe into it. Inquire as to what is stopping you….what is the fear?

This is why we need to seek teachers and mentors. Your yoga teacher will help you hold your pose when you would give up. You might have a business teacher who challenges you to do things that, if left to your own devices you would avoid and distract yourself with everything esle!. You go to a PT or gym who will push you far harder than you would push yourself.

Never under estimate the value of getting a good team of people behind you. Never underestimate the value of investing in yourself because it is far more difficult to push yourself to where you need to go – yourself.

Where do you want to go this year? Now is the perfect energy to review and refocus and start building your tribe of mentors to get you there.

Could be for health.
Could be for finance.
Could be business.
Could be for relationships.
Could be for a very specific goal – like completing a marathon.

How far can you take yourself and where do you need a gentle shove?
